Cost of Living increases over the last 20 years

Ahead of Jeremy Hunt's first Spring Budget, we've taken a look at some of the key costs and notable markers people are faced with everyday when it comes to the cost of living - tracking how they've increased over the last twenty years.


Take a look at our interactive graph below to see how house prices and rent, daily household costs such as electricity and petrol, and consumer products such as milk and even a pint of beer have increased since 2002, compared to average weekly earnings:

The most notable cost increases shown in the data are the price of electricity, followed by the increase in average house prices and petrol, all of which vastly outstrip increases in average weekly earnings, shown in red in the chart above.
